Application of butterfly pea root extract in increasing learning and memory using animal models
The consumption of Butterfly Pea root extract is believed to increase amount of Acetylcholine at numerous sites of brain, which lead to enhance learning and memory. The objective of this research is to study the effect of Butterfly Pea root extract on learning and memory using mice as animal models before administrated to human. Butterfly Pea root is extracted by using water as solvent at 25oC for 4 hours to be administrated to mice with dosage A (80 mg ga/kg weight) and dosage B (236.7 mg ga/kg weight). The alteration rate is achieved from a cognitive performance test through a Y-Maze. Different incubation time (60 and 120 minutes) of Scopolamine, Prostigmin and Butterfly Pea root extract does not have any effect to the alteration rate. The dosage B (66.9┬▒9.2%) group has the highest alteration rate compared to others; negative control (57.1┬▒7.6%), scopolamine (48.7┬▒10.8%), positive control (49.5┬▒14.3%), and dosage A (52.7┬▒8.0%) group. As a result, Butterfly Pea root extract can increase learning and memory in mice.
